Following the footsteps of two of the best cat fishermen on Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork, I was taught the art of cat fishing at a very young age. Their unique style of fishing and knowledge of the lakes were second to none. These two gentlemen were my Granddad Steve Coats and Uncle George Coats. They were both born and raised in Rains County. They hunted and fished the Sabine bottom and Lake Fork bottom until Lake Tawakoni was impounded in 1960 on Sabine River and Lake Fork Lake was impounded 1980 on Lake Fork Creek. Their knowledge of the lay of the land, creek channels and other variations gave them great insight when the lakes filled up in 1960 and 1980.
The process of fishing different areas of Lake Tawakoni and experimenting with different baits started immediately. They developed dough bait which contained different ingredients and through the years has changed to a dip bait which I still make and use today. Through their experiences on Lake Tawakoni they were able to easily adapt the same style of fishing to Lake Fork when it was impounded in 1980. Their knowledge and style of fishing was passed to me through my 30 years of fishing with them on Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork and that I will cherish for the rest of my life. So with that being said I would like to invite you to come down to Lake Tawakoni or Lake Fork and allow me to pass some of the same knowledge and great experiences as my Granddad and uncle did to me. Come on lets go fishing!
Thanks
Jim Taylor
